-HARTNETT GETS SECOND CHAMPIONSHIP IN THREE YEARS-
By Ryan Lepre
Joey Grammes put a few tough weeks behind him on Pump-N-Pantry Championship Night at the Penn Can Speedway. Grammes last year’s champ held off the 2013 Modified Champion Kevin Hartnett in the final laps to grab the win. Grammes of Leighton, PA in the Brad Grammes No.5J took the race lead from Steve Babicek on lap 20 then held off a fast closing Hartnett by just a car length at the finish. Hartnett of Barto, PA ran a new Hig Fab Chassis on Friday night and was a bit tight to catch the high flying Grammes. Babicek of Binghamton, NY finished third with Billy Thornton driving through the field twice to finish fourth and Bob Trapper of Scranton, PA completed the top five. Grant Hilfiger picked up his third 602 Sportsman win in a close battle with Ryan Olsommer while fourth place finisher Alex Stanton claimed the Championship. Jon Carpenter clinched the Street Stock title in fashion as he won his fifth main event in a row. Will Eastman won in the Xcel Modifieds while Nick Mady bested brother Brian by just two points for the Championship. Kenny Underwood made it a dozen wins on Friday as he was also the Four Cylinder Champ. Ted Mills Jr. won in the Factory Stocks while Gary Cleveland is the Champion.
Bobby Trapper Jr. and Steve Babicek led the Modified field to the green flag. Babicek took the initial lead over Trapper Jr. as the caution flew for Bob Hamm who collected Billy Thornton and Brian Malcolm. The caution flew as Brian Weaver spun on lap two just a lap later Dan Pompey and Adam MacGeorge made contact as Pompey jumped MacGeorge’s wheel tagged the yuke tire and spun. Babicek was now challenged by the No.30+ of Bob Trapper. With five laps complete it was Babicek, Trapper, Mike Nagel, Trapper Jr. and Ken Titus. Nagel retired to the infield as Babicek held a narrow lead over Trapper, Titus, Grant Hilfiger and Joey Grammes. Grammes was moving well on the outside as he was into third on lap 13. At the halfway mark Grammes took second from Trapper with Kevin Hartnett up to fourth. A couple cautions slowed the pace on lap 18 for the restart Grammes was hounding Babicek for the lead. Grammes powered around the outside of Babicek as they ran side by side. Grammes took the lead for good on lap 20 off turn two meanwhile Hartnett was closing as he was into third. Hartnett took over second with six to go from Babicek while Thornton cracked the top five. Hartnett caught up to Grammes with four to go and searched for a way to the lead in the final circuits. However Grammes in the Slug-N-Slam Construction ride held the lead to the checkers over 13th starter Hartnett in his new Thomas Pompei Contracting No.88 Hig Fab. Babicek held on with his car pushing water in the Craig and Cindy Racing No.S1 for third with Thornton in the DRPRC.com and Trapper in the No.30+ Bicknell the top five. The rest of the top ten were Titus, Hilfiger, Mike Nagel Jr., 18th starter Weaver and Mike Schane.
In the 602 Sportsman Nick Branning led lap one before Randy Gates took over the top spot. Gates was followed closely by Grant Hilfiger and Ryan Olsommer. Hilfiger took over the top spot on lap four as Olsommer followed into second. Olsommer hounded the back bumper and outside quarter panel of Hilfiger until the checkers but Hilfiger held on for the win. Olsommer placed second with Wes Campbell, Champ Alex Stanton and Dusty Barton the top five.
