TWO BIG RACING WEEKENDS OPEN PENN CAN SPEEDWAY SEASON
Susquehanna, PA…The great racing action is less than two weeks away at Penn Can Speedway oval. The season will start with two big weekend of action on the schedule. The season will start on Saturday April 13th. This race date will include the first annual Ironman 100. Titled the “Big Kahuna of Street Stock Racing”, the event will feature the first ever one hundred lap street stock race at Penn Can. Joining the popular street stocks in action on this special Saturday event will be the open sportsman division, the Xcel 600 Modifieds, the factory stocks, and four cylinders.
Ever since the initial announcement of the Ironman 100, interest has been high in the street stock division. The format for the $1000 to win event will feature heat races, consis, and a non qualifiers event if enough cars enter. All cars entering will draw for starting positions in heats and the feature. The one hundred lap feature will have a competition yellow at the halfway point in the race. Teams may hold their positions by electing to stay on the speedway or teams may pit. Teams pitting may do any work necessary and will rejoin the field in the position they fall into on the track behind those cars that do not pit. ROC street stock rules will be followed for this event.
The Open Sportsman race will include a twenty five lap feature event paying a minimum of $850 to win. The cars will qualify through heat races and consis. The winner of the twenty five lap event will receive a guaranteed starting position in the “Hot Summer Night” Race of Champions event at the speedway. The highest placing 602 sportsman will receive a guaranteed position in the “Clash at the Can” in June.
The following Friday the official start of the point season will begin with the traditional “Can Opener” featuring the mighty modifieds in a thirty five lap event paying $1500 to win. The 602 sportsman, street stocks, factory stocks, four cylinders, and Xcel Mods will also be on the card. Modified teams will draw for heat race starting positions with the top finishers redrawing for the feature event. Last season 2011 Penn Can champion, Kevin Hartnett won “The Can Opener”. A strong field of modifieds is expected for the first of several big events on the 2013 schedule for the modified teams.
After last season’s King of the Can finale race teams are looking forward to getting back on the newly reconfigured clay oval. Race teams were excited about the added racing room through the turns and anticipate more of the same side by side racing action.
Gates for this special Saturday race will open at 2:00 with the first heat race scheduled at 5:00. Grandstand gates will open at 3:00. Gates for the “Can Opener” will open at 5:15 with racing at 7:30. Anyone with questions can contact the speedway at 570-585-9928 or check us out on the web at www.penncan.com.
